The Parthenon
Built between 447 and 432 B.C. was a beautiful temple, the Parthenon, which had many uses and purposes. The temple stands on a hill called the Acropolis overlooking the city. It served as many purposes before it was severely damaged in 1967. The Parthenon, an octostyle, peripteral Doric temple with Ionic architectural features, housed the chryselaphantine statue of Athena, Parthenos sculpted by Phidias and dedicated in 439 or 438 BC. The Parthenon was dedicated to Athena, the city's patron goddess. It is probably the best example of ancient Greek architecture.
